Boat Birthday Party in Sag Harbor 8/9/14   I received a call about a week and half ago to play at a 40th birthday party on a boat.  I was really excited about the opportunity.  A week of thoughts raised a couple of concerns that I wasn’t able to answer.  They told me they had an on board speaker system so i was heavily banking on being able to use it.  When I got on the boat I shook my head and was curious on where I was going to setup .  An enthusiastic crew said they would take care of it.  I got an idea to setup on a side table and to sit on one of the seats of the couch.  So I setup the laptop with the mixtrack in the case with headphones, and i used the internal sound card with the mic output.   Setup below .  It’s very strange that they don’t allow boats to dock for long in Sag Harbor.  We had to turn back for one guest who arrived late.     I had sound up quickly after waiting for the guests settled in.  I started with Classic Rock, then i went to some current Pop music.  The boat stopped at Crabby Jerry’s in Greenport so I had an hour break.  I wish I would have gotten off the boat and eaten something.  My adrenaline kicked in and I wasn’t hungry until I was done.  Gotta love Summer.     We got the boat back going again and went on with some dance, electro house, hiphop and we threw it back a bit with some old classics.   I wanted to play Rock the boat by Bob Sinclair so i dropped that towards the middle. This fundraiser is unlike any other. It’s twelve straight hours 6pm-6am. Luckily i have dj and friend Sam Santiago to help me get through the event. And even if you split it 50 50 six hours is still long a gig. So I would classify this as a dj marathon. It’s not just about Dj’ing as we both have to be sound engineers and at times the host the event. It’s for a good cause cancer research and i think they raised $56,000 dollars to help the cause and that’s just awesome. They decided to bring the event outside do to inclement weather that was on its way. I try to forget that i’m donating my time and try to concentrate on having fun and I had a blast. I was wearing goofy glasses and dancing around in my blanket. I tend not to get any rest during these things . I go all out and then recover the next couple days. i got a late call to do a class reunion.   This would be my first trip to B Smiths in Sag Harbor, so i dressed up a little bit.  I’m glad I did.  I arrived at the venue early just to make sure I was able to get setup before the event.  I’m glad I did because guests arrived early and I wanted to be setup before.  I was told to stay in the 70’s , 80s .  We went a little off that path and to some current dance music.  We had the whole floor dancing as you can see by the images and video below.  The staff there was very friendly and made me feel very comfortable. The food was delicous.  I hope to return back to the venue for more parties.  I feel like the guests had an unbelievable time. Another highly anticipated day started early as I got a late call to pick up a bubble machine friday night.  Thankfully I was close to a Party City where i was able to pick one up.  I arrived in Bridgehampton early to setup.  I was a little disappointed that I forgot my fan.   As it turned out to be a hot day.  The kids really loved the bubble machine and that brought a smile to my face. With a fast growing business I was forced with a dilemma today.  Fortunately one of my Dj friends Sam Santiago was available  to help me play this corporate party in Southampton.    I’ve known Sam for two years as we share the stage at the annual Relay 4 Life for Southampton.  Sam is an outstanding Dj and i was happy to have him on board today. The following words were written by Sam talk about his experience playing music on super hot day in Southampton As any good DJ, I arrived an hour and a half prior to todays event.  I was greeted by Carly and some of the other party planners. They were extremely nice and Immediately we discussed where would be the best place to set up my equipment.  The caterers had arrived at around the same time, so everybody was running around getting everything ready for the 2:00pm start.  It was your typical beautiful Southampton Home that they rented for the summer, so I could imagine the parties thrown there.  If only the walls could talk, the stories!!!  Come 2:00pm, the guess started to arrive. It was an intimate affairs with a small group of well chosen friends and you can see them all enjoying themselves.  I observed a variety in age so I started with some classic hit songs and moved up to todays hit music. After dinner, I started to play dance songs and you can see people grooving to the music. As the dinner party started to wind down and the guess were leaving, many of them stop by the DJ booth to thank me for the music.  All in all, it was a really nice party and I hope to be invited again to play. First graduation party of the year.  I’ve lived on Long Island my whole life you think i’d know where Shoreham is, well I do now lol.  I’ll even give you directions.   Normally I arrive too early anyway.   Golf was on my mind as I arrived at the beautiful Tallgrass Golf club in Shoreham.  I think i saw the whole course from where I was standing.  I just had my clubs re-gripped and I’m looking forward to getting back on the course after my debut on a hot July 4th at Islands End in Greenport.  I shot a 108.   As far as the party was concerned it was a great time.  I had to compete with outside as alot of these indoor functions tend to spray outside when it’s nice out.  We definitely played a diverse selection of music that included country, rock, classic rock, hiphop, dance, house, and latin. One of the gigs that i always return for is the annual cocktail party at Southampton Commons.  We had a bad june 0 gigs but July and August seem to be  strong.  It’s interesting how up and down this sport is.   I decided to keep the heavy stuff at home and go light.  The light setup seemed to work great with the wireless connected to the mixtrack.  I just wish my Gemini’s would stay together no bass on one speaker again.  UGH.   Tired of fixing these things.   I had one unruly guest who complained about the music.  She came up and asked me to change the music.  And i replied what would you like to hear, she said Something different (I was playing oldies at the time and the lady was in her mid 60s).  I was very surprised.  The lady approached me again and told me I better turn the music down and got in my face.  I walked away.  I later heard she complained to one of the board members that she was not going to ever come back.  OK BYE.   She must have been having a bad day.  Too bad, the rest of us had a blast.  Great turnout as there weren’t enough tables for the guests.  I also tried the sign up high as it is usually connected to the table.
